Dog breeding is the practice of mating selected dogs with the intent to maintain or produce specific qualities and characteristics. Breeding a litter of puppies can be very rewarding, but if you are new to dog breeding, you should remember that it can also be a costly and time consuming experience.


Small breeds tend to mature faster than large breeds. On average, however, males become fertile after six months of age and reach full sexual maturity by 12 to 15 months. Healthy stud dogs may remain sexually active and fertile to old age. Adult males are able to mate at any time.


Unlike their male pals, female dogs can't be bred that much. The optimal number of litters she can carry is around 3 to 4 litters, depending on the number and size of the litter, as well as her overall health and recovery process in between pregnancies.
