Animal husbandry is the branch of agriculture concerned with animals that are raised for meat, fibre, milk, eggs, or other products. It includes day-to-day care, selective breeding and the raising of livestock.

What is the significance of animal husbandry?

A large number of farmers in Nigeria now depend on animal husbandry for their livelihood. In addition to supplying milk, meat, eggs, their castings (dung) and hides, animals, mainly bullocks, are the major source of power for both farmers and drayers. Thus, animal husbandry plays an important role in the rural economy.

The animal industry is broken down into three major areas: production, supplies and services, and marketing and processing. The animal production area of the animal industry primarily produces animals for food and other uses.
